The north coast of Norfolk is fascinating and unusual. So near to big cities, it is still unspoiled, with wandering roads, flint cottages and vast beaches. There are bustling resorts but there are also quiet coastal villages for relaxation and watching the impressive bird life. And there is history, from the birthplace of Lord Nelson and the stately homes of Houghton Hall (home of England’s first prime minister), Holkham Hall and Felbrigg Hall to places with royal  connections – Sandringham House and Blickling Hall, linked forever with Anne Boleyn.

To the west, the coastline is encroaching into the sea with Scolt Head Island, home of the seals, and beaches can be up to a mile wide. But to the east the sea is attacking relentlessly and erosion is a constant threat. These forces meet at Weybourne, long considered the spot for invading forces to hit, and once John Major’s secret hideaway.
