Beautiful North Norfolk
Terry Palmer
ISBN 978 1 8521507 9 2
112 pages
£5.95
The north coast of Norfolk is
fascinating and unusual. So near to
big cities, it is still unspoiled,
with wandering roads, flint cottages
and vast beaches. There are bustling
resorts but there are also quiet
coastal villages for relaxation and
watching the impressive bird life.
And there is history, from the
birthplace of Lord Nelson and other
famous sailors, to the stately homes
of Houghton Hall (home of
England’s first prime
minister), Holkham Hall and Felbrigg
Hall. There are the places with royal
connect-ions – Sandringham
House and Blickling Hall, linked
forever with Anne Boleyn.
The pocket-sized book also tells
of the area’s four private
railways, the background to the
holiday homes business, opens the
door on the many parish churches, and
talks of local cuisine: have you ever
eaten seaweed?
To the west, the coastline is
encroaching into the sea with Scolt
Head Island, home of the seals, and
beaches can be up to a mile wide. But
to the east the sea is attacking
relentlessly and erosion is a
constant threat. These forces meet at
Weybourne, long considered the spot
for invading forces to hit, and now
John Major’s secret
hideaway.
Illustrations: numerous photos,
black-&-white and colour.

A Day Out in Blakeney
Terry Palmer
ISBN 978 1 8521506 9 3
£2.25
Vast sandbanks stretching more
than a mile out to sea; shingle
beaches sliding smoothly into the
sea. Vast acres of salt-marsh riddled
with creeks; cliffs crunching down
onto the shore.
The north Norfolk coastline is as
varied as cheese and cucumber
sandwiches, but every bit has its own
interest. Add to this the mysterious
influence of a strong tide sweeping
down the North Sea and you have a
landscape without parallel anywhere
else in England - indeed, in the
British Isles. .
